  • About Me: /weapon. Bioweapon, get it? I wonder if I'm the first person to make that horrible, horrible pun on a gaming forum - I would imagine not. Anyway - Student turned touring musician, turned Band Manager/Audio Engineer, turned student once again. Hoo Ray. Also, I occasionally write articles, but none of them relate to games or gaming in the slightest. I am in love with the Try/Buy/Fry review scale, and have been hoping to implement something similar for my own journalistic endeavors. As such, I have a vested interest in CG's editorial style, and I hope it catches on.

You know what, Fudge? Eff Journalism. Let's go write romance novels together.

    It sounds interesting, promising even.

I suppose it does levy a strong argument against my stance that only publishers care about Metacritic scores. Reviewers do too - if only because having some PR guy on your case because he's three percentage points away from changing color on MC and this is ALLYOURFAULT - yeah. This, I can imagine, gets annoying.

Honestly, this is the kind of thing that informs me a lot about a game. A useful review to me, is like talking to a trusted gamer friend about their experience with a game. Weighed by their preferences and bias, which I know.

I confess, this is why I go to Crispy first, if I'm curious about a game. The personalities of the staff are accessible, and varied. You guys aren't afraid to disagree, and publicly at that. It's become a useful tool for me.

So yeah, if CriticDNA actually works, this is good for game journalism in general, I think.

Not that I have any faith in it working, mind you, but it'd be nice.

  • World's Greatest Independent Game Stores: GameBuzz (Montreal, Quebec)

Man. None of those in Cleveland. The nearest I can think of in terms of experience would be BIG FUN (capitol letters let you know I love you) http://bigfunbigfun.com/

The reverence is there - sadly, most of the video games are not. Atari? Yes. Intellivision? So it would seem. SNES and Genesis? Eh, somewhat.

Past that, we have The Exchange (formerly record exchange) and little indie record shops that invariably have excellent service if not a huge game selection.

But they never, ever, get in my face about reserving something or not.

To illustrate the point, I submit this example from my most recent gamestop experience.

Me: So, Dragon Age. X-three-six. Hook it up, my good man.
    GS: Did you reserve it?
    Me: (Raises eyebrow incredulously)
GS: (Looks back at giant stack of Dragon Age games behind the counter) I dunno if we have enough, man.
Me: No, I did not reserve this game. I have never been in this store before.
GS: (To co-worker) Well, at least he's honest.
Me: Hey, it's cool if you like, don't serve my kind or something. There is a best buy no more than a thousand paces from here. I'll bet they have a giant stack too - that I can walk up to, and bury my face in a dozen such games, if I feel inclined.
GS: True, but they're *the man*.
Me: (EVEN MORE INCREDULOUS EYEBROW RAISE)
GS: Hey, it's cool man. You came here, not there.
Me: ...You're next to the Chipotle.
GS: (Rings up the game) Hey, do you want a strategy guide?
Me: Have the internet if I feel like cheating, thanks.
GS: Right. We both know that's not as good, but yeah, whatever. Hey, lemme know how Dragon Age is, next time you're in, kay?
Me: I shall certainly do so, the next time I set foot in here.

Dragon age update (since all the cool kids are doing it)

Graphics still ugly. Interface still sucks.

    Still don't care, even a little. :)

  • Dragon Age: Origins

    @w1ndst0rm:

This game is a descendant of that old infinity engine - the whole point is to pause all the time. Sort of turn-based - but only when you need it to.

KOTOR was a natural evolution of that, but I only found the combat enjoyable when the game was auto-pausing after each round. The tactics were clearer, and things seemed less random.

If I have one wish from Bioware, it is not prettier graphics, it is not more DLC. I adore this game - even with its issues. All I want is for the game to pause each round. Otherwise, this is by far and away my favorite game in quite some time.

Now, if only I wasn't in such academic crunch time right now, I could tell you more about what the game is like, if you've put more than a couple hours into it :)

  • The Great Cull of 2009: What Do You Do With Old, Crappy Games? by Scott Jones

    October 28, 2009 2:27:30 PM

    Yipes. Ok.

Advent Rising (xbox) This never actually played on my xbox.
Hunter: The Reckoning: Redemption (For PS2 - don't hate, the first two were fun. At least, that's how I remember them)
    Timesplitters 2 (xbox)
NBA 2K5 (xbox) which was actually pretty good once upon a time.

These are the games sitting on the floor of my car's backseat right now, having survived the great Killstring Purge of moving downtown. Nobody wanted them. I'm thinking of salvation army?

  • Swag Tester: Win A Dark Void Travel Set by John Teti

    Dark Void?

Time. Time in which to play said games. Time in which I am not doing homework, or my roommate has claimed the tv.

The latter shall be addressed by moving tomorrow. And the former, perhaps by H1N1! If you read about a swine flu outbreak at Cleveland State University, fear not fellow Crispeteers - Your Pal Killstring is spending some quality time with his 360... and maybe coughing his lungs up, but this is of secondary importance to *finally* playing Fallout 3, am I right?

    (I am right)

My plan is to finish some games that have long needed finishing. Red Faction: Guerrilla, and Bionic Commando are STILL sitting there, mocking me.

I will also, like a little girl with a new set of paper dolls, make at least three stupidly detailed characters in the Dragon Age Character generator.

I say this without a hint of shame, such is my glee.

    @CG-Prophet:

I realize that this is sarcasm, but think about it for a second.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like it could actually be kind of awesome, in a trippy, Katamari-when-it-first-came-out kind of way?

Killstring hasn't rated any games yet. Have you? Find some.

The Games That Time Forgot

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
