  • The Questionable Ethics of Brütal Legend

    October 26, 2009 3:24:10 PM

Aren't we past the point where things being demonic or satanic automatically means evil? Shouldn't an article on ethics look at the actual ethics of the game characters rather than just the semiotics? At the beginning of the game Eddie starts out without a weapon, surrounded by people who are wielding swords with murderous intent. He grabs an axe and goes to war to defend and liberate people who take him in and protect him. Yes, he smokes, drinks, and likes women. So do I. This doesn't mean you're playing the "evil" side, it means he's an interesting character.

  • Critical Showdown: Electric Jesus vs. Super-Cannibal (Infamous vs. Prototype)

It's funny, I had the exact opposite reaction. I felt that InFamous tried to have an affecting story and a relatable character and failed, but Prototype just went for the balls-out misanthropic, sociopathic fun factor that I appreciated a lot more than contrived-feeling morality.

I've probably been desensitized to violence by years of gaming, though. Someone should call Jack Thompson on me.

  • Turtle, Turtle, Turtle: RTSes for Basebodies

    May 18, 2009 1:00:43 PM

Plants vs. Zombies bored me pretty quickly. I loved the funny zombies and the good animation, but after you've seen them once the next 50 identical ones running towards you at a snail's pace aren't all that exciting. Maybe it would have helped if I felt like I was doing anything meaningful - I played the whole game absentmindedly tossing out plants without really paying attention and never lost.

On the other hand, I liked Defense Grid a lot. It was also slow, but it had a fast forward key you could hold down at all times unless something important was going on. And the way it's set up, small changes in strategy can lead to huge changes in how well you're doing - the exact opposite of Plants vs. Zombies. Plus, it has a funny British computer talking to you the whole way through, a practice every game from here on out should adopt.

  • World's Greatest Videogame Toilets: Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Why are you always writing about toilets? Every time I come to this site it's all toilets this, toilets that.

It's the stories that come out afterward that make me love this game.

  • Rush, Boom, Turtle: The Game So Nice They Made It Thrice

    October 28, 2008 12:44:23 PM

I think StarCraft 1 told its story really well in gameplay as well as in the cutscenes. Sure, each campaign had a few missions that were there for gameplay and just had filler plot supporting them, but a lot of the big character moments were told in-mission as well. Kerrigan being betrayed and kidnapped just as you, the player, are panicking and being overwhelmed by the gigantic Zerg swarm was a brilliant moment, for example.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
