Nolan Bushnell to Receive BAFTA Fellowship

nolan Nolan Bushnell to Receive BAFTA Fellowship industryThe British Academy of Film and Television Arts, best described as the UK’s version of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is an organization “dedicated to the recognition and promotion of excellence in the fields of the moving image”. What makes BAFTA unique is that it fully recognizes video games as a part of the entertainment industry. This year, BAFTA announced that it will be honoring video game pioneer Nolan Bushnell with a fellowship at this year’s GAME British Academy Video Games Awards.

Bushnell first made a name for himself back in 1972 when he co-founded a little game company known as Atari and started the video game revolution with Pong. While Pong wasn’t the first video game marketed to the public, it was the first to achieve widespread popularity in both the arcade and home console markets. One urban legend is that the sheer number of people playing Pong was so high that it actually caused a coin shortage in the US, with additional coins being minted to meet demand.

“Even in difficult economic times, the video game industry continues to support our country’s local, state and national economies with record-breaking sales figures and rapid technological innovation,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers. “Our industry’s exceptional creators, artists, and storytellers, coupled with a commitment to providing unparalleled entertainment, have fueled high-octane growth, turning video games into the most sought-after medium on the market today.”

girls WGA Videogame Writing Nominees Announced actionAfter people complained about Dead Head Fred winning last year’s award (the reason being that the nominated game in question had to feature writing from a member), it looks like the Writers Guild Association is trying to redeem itself this year.
