Sony Online Promotion Raises $20k for Charity

void__27_-640x Sony Online Promotion Raises $20k for Charity genresIf you read the news here regularly, you might remember that back in January, we reported on Sony Online’s fundraising efforts for the Child’s Play charity. By buying certain specific Child’s Play in-game items in EverQuest and EverQuest II with Station Cash, Sony would donate $10 to the Child’s Play charity per item. Well, the month long promotion has officially come to a close and the totals have been tallied. So how much did gamers raise coming together for the sake of a good cause? In a statement released this week, Sony Online Entertainment announced that its Child’s Play 2009 Winter Charity Drive ended up raising more than $20,000 to the Child’s Play charity.

“The ability of our players to make a donation of this magnitude in these tough economic times is beyond anything we could have hoped for,” said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. “As we continue to diversify with programs like Station Cash we will be able to offer unique items that benefit not only our players, but other partnerships and organizations such as Child’s Play in this case.”

Founded in 2003, Child’s Play is a game industry charity that is dedicated to providing children with toys and age-appropriate games at more than 40 hospitals worldwide.

Sony Online Teams With Topps For Free Realms TCG

Earlier today, Sony Online Entertainment and The Topps Company announced that the two companies have reached an exclusive long-term licensing agreement which will give Topps the rights to create a physical trading card game based on SOE’s upcoming online game Free Realms. The physical card game will be designed to complement the online experience of the digital version playable within Free Realms.

“Our online trading card games have been hugely successful, and the chance to take our digital trading cards into the physical world with an industry leader like Topps is a fantastic opportunity for us as a company,” said John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment.

The digital version of the Free Realms Trading Card Game will launch simultaneously with the launch of the Free Realms online game, while the Topps products will be available in Spring 2009. Topps will offer an exclusive Passport to Free Realms Starter Pack, as well as 11-card booster packs featuring a loot card in every pack.
