Capcom Raises the Dead with New Resident Evil Wii Titles

With the release of Resident Evil 5 this week, coupled with today’s announcement of a new RE5 Versus mode being made available for download, you can’t help but feel that Xbox 360 and PS3 owners are getting all the zombie love these days. To paraphrase George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, “When there is no more room on next-gen consoles, the dead will walk on the Wii.”

Earlier today, the company announced plans for a return of the Resident Evil series to the Wii later this year with the upcoming release of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, a sequel to the successful Wii-exclusive Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, as well as plans for a new line of Resident Evil “Classics” for the Wii, starting with Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero exclusively to the Wii.

Capcom Bringing Versus Mode to Resident Evil 5

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all of my years of experience in dealing with undead, it’s got to be the Golden Rule of Zombie Survival: “You don’t have to run fast … just faster than the person next to you.” Apparently Capcom has learned this little tidbit of information as well, as the company announced today that it will be releasing a new “Versus” mode to Resident Evil 5’s gameplay within a few weeks of the game’s release. The new Versus mode will pit players against each other in a contest of survival against the legions of the undead.

According to Capcom, Versus mode will allow up to four players to match wits in online battles across two different game types. The first, “Slayer’s Rule” is a point-based game that challenges players to kill the most Majinis. The second game type, “Survivor’s Rule, pits players against one another as they hunt something more dangerous than the Majinis … each other. Players can begin the hunt as Chris, Sheva or other secret characters, and choose from either one-on-one or two-versus-two team matches for either of the two gameplay styles.

Versus will be available on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network a few weeks after Resident Evil 5 is available. Versus will be available for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE or $4.99 on the PlayStation Network. Versus mode requires the Resident Evil game software in order to be played. A broadband internet connection is required.

The most recent game company to step up to the firing line was Capcom, who released details of its year-to-date financials to investors late yesterday. The results were pretty rough, with the company reporting an overall loss of net income totaling a whopping 95 percent. However, things aren’t as bad as they seem, and the company expects to change things by the end of the financial year.

360 Owners Get Exclusive Resident Evil 5 Demo Next Week

s204_0070-00000_bmp_jpgcopy-640x 360 Owners Get Exclusive Resident Evil 5 Demo Next Week actionLooking forward to taking on the hordes of zombies in Resident Evil 5, but not big on waiting ’til the game’s March 13th release date? Well, if you’ve got a 360, you’re in luck.

In a statement released this morning, Capcom announced that Xbox 360 owners will be able to exclusively download a two-level, playable demo for one week beginning on Monday, January 26. The demo is set within two stages from the beginning of the game – Assembly Place and Shanty Town — featuring plenty of co-operative action, shooting, hordes of bloodthirsty infected Majini enemies and a few puzzles to round out the action. And if that wasn’t enough to satisfy that taste for the undead, a new exclusive high-definition trailer of the game, shown only at the Tokyo Game Show in October of 2008, will be made available for download on the Xbox LIVE service this Friday.

The demo has three levels of co-op play: single-player with AI support, two-player split-screen on a single Xbox 360 and two-player across Xbox LIVE. Xbox 360 gamers will be first to take on the new enemies in battle, including an army of weapon-wielding infected Majini, the gigantic hooded Majini Executioner and even the dreaded Chainsaw Majini. Players can also take a test drive of both the classic “Resident Evil”-style controls and the newer “Action” controls inspired by games like Gears of War 2 and Halo 3.
