Square Enix is probably delighted to hear that its latest Dragon Quest game debuted as the number of game in its first week at retail in Japan. The game managed to move an impressive 664,000 units in its first week, outpacing games like Gundam Battle Universe for PSP, Persona 4 for PS2, Wii fit and Mario Kart Wii. Its nearest competitor for the week, Gundam Battle Universe sold a paltry 138, 000 units. Here are the rest of the top ten best selling games in Japan for the week ending July 20, 2008:

  1. Dragon Quest V - DS

Persona 4 Dated

As Atlus gets ready to launch Persona 4 on July 10 in Japan, it is also setting the date for the North American release of the game. Persona 4 will be released on December 9 for the PlayStation 2 and will include the game, along with a soundtrack CD with select music from the game for $39.99.

Dubbed a murder mystery role-playing game by Atlus, Persona 4 will be almost two times as large as Persona 3, offering nearly 70 hours of gameplay in a new setting with new characters and a brand new storyline that we hope doesn’t involve suicidal emo teens. Set in the Japanese countryside, a series of mysterious murders sets a team of gifted supernatural sleuths on a path to uncover the truth.

Other features being kicked around include the ability to build relationships, the ability to take direct control of your party in combat, the opportunity to take on a part-time job, and most important of all - the ability to summon more than 180 different Persona, acquire and fuse them and craft weapons.

Look for Persona 4 in North America December 9, and in Japan on July 10.
