Sony Confirms Skype Coming to PSP
Last week, word leaked out from Sony’’s CES website that the PSP would soon include some sort of integration with the Skype Voice over IP service. Now Sony has officially let the cat out of the bag, shooting over a few specifics about the upcoming service in a new press release. The new Skype features include:
Free voice calls between Skype users
Skype contact list management (view existing contacts, add new ones)
Skype presence (see which friends are online and available to talk)
SkypeOut calls to make calls to landlines and mobile phones anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of Skype credit)
Optional SkypeIn number that lets users receive calls on Skype from landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of Skype credit)
Ability to view and modify Skype settings and account details (including username creation, SkypeOut settings, voicemail settings and call forwarding)
The new Skype functions will go live later this month with a new software update. There is one curious item in the announcement, though: In the press release, the service is specifically announced for the new slim PSP (the PSP-2000 series). There’’s no official word on whether or not the service will be compatible with the older, fatter PSP model. Looks like those with the classic model will have to play a game of wait-and-see.
