Carmack: iPhone a serious threat to other hand-helds

carmack Carmack: iPhone a serious threat to other hand-helds ds-platformsIn an interview with Chris Morris for CNBC, id Software founder and chief programmer John Carmack said that Apple’s iPhone may be a serious threat to the hand-held gaming market - specifically Nintendo’s DS and DSi.

It’s a pretty interesting comment if you consider that earlier this week a prominent analyst (who I won’t name here) said that the iPhone - in the long term - will not be a viable game platform. Carmack sees it another way - and he should know, he’s been working on the platform and selling his games via Apple’s app store for quite some time.

Earlier this week it was announced that there are now 100,000 apps available on the iPhone, and while not all of those are games, a good portion of them are and many of them sell for anywhere from 99 cents to $9.99 USD.

“I think mid- to long-term it’s a significant threat,” he says. “I don’t carry a DS or a PSP around, but I’ve got my iPhone everywhere. So if it plays good games, I’m less likely to pick one of the others up. … I think the stars could align and it could start to eclipse those other systems in terms of unit sales.”

While Carmack is a PC guy through and through, he has fallen in love with developing games for the iPhone. He describes his time developing games on the system “fun.”

“I wouldn’t be shocked if someone has one in development right now, though they probably don’t realize it will run that high yet,” he told CNBC. “If a title could do well at $9.99, you could put [Nintendo] DS level development expenses into it.”

id Software has made it their goal to release one iPhone game every quarter over the next year. Most recently the company released an iPhone remake of the classic DOOM game called “Doom Classic.” iPhone versions of one of my favorite id Software titles - Quake - and a follow-up to the popular Doom RPG are also in the works. id Software is also planning on having its latest game, RAGE, ready to go for the iPhone when it is released in 2010.

Doom Classic hits iPhone, iPod Touch

doom Doom Classic hits iPhone, iPod Touch actionFancy some old school, first-person shooter action from the founding fathers of the genre? Well then you might want to visit the App store and download Classic DOOM from id Software. The App recreates the classic game DOOM experience. The iPhone and iPod Touch game includes the first three episodes, along with the additional fourth episode Thy Flesh Consumed. id Software plans to release other Doom related content at a later date that won’t be a separate product from doom; in other words it will kind of be rolled into the game like DLC. Interesting. Other features include multiplayer for up to four players (co-op, deathmatch) , and the ability to use either the original Doom soundtrack or music from your iPod library.

The game is available for right around $7 USD, and weighs in at right around 76.8MB. Download it now from the App Store.

Wolfenstein RPG available for iPod Touch and iPhone

EA Mobile has released Wolfenstein RPG, a new take on the classic action game originally created by id Software, on the App Store. Wolfenstein RPG for iPhone) and iPod touch is a turn-based role playing action game similar to id’s DOOM RPG where players battle Axis soldiers, navigate through mysterious underground tunnels, and battle a horde of monsters to take down the Axis’ diabolical Paranormal Division. You won’t get to box Hitler at the end, but you can at least make him feel bad by beating up his comrades.

In Wolfenstein RPG, players jump into the boots of Sergeant B.J. Blazkowicz, leader of an elite U.S. fighting unit, who is imprisoned by the evil Axis Army and must annihilate enemies in 9 levels. Utilizing the Multi-Touch user interface of iPhone and iPod touch, players tap to pick up weapons to hit, kick, dynamite and destroy super soldiers, zombies and the shadowy Harbinger of Doom; swipe to control fighting and walking motions; and use the accelerometer to propel the sniper rifle into action.

More details about the game can be found at www.eamobile.com.

Hidden RAGE video

EA has launched a new website for id Software’s upcoming action game, RAGE, at www.aftertheimpact.com. Also of note, the latest issue of Game Informer features RAGE and is on stands now. Finally, a new section of the site that contains an exclusive video for users has been hidden behind a password protected gateway, which you’ll have to search to find the answer to somewhere on the site. You need to find the password to get to it and I assume it is meant for Mature audeiences… A picture of the obstacle you’ll face is below, just for fun.

id Zenimax Media Acquires id Software industryZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks and Zenimax Online, announced that it has completed the acquisition of legendary game studio, id Software, creators of such hits as DOOM, QUAKE, Wolfenstein, and its upcoming title, RAGE. Bethesda Softworks will publish all future id Software releases - other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers.

Founded in 1991,  created the popular first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, and went on to set new standards in the genre with DOOM and QUAKE titles. In addition, id Software develops cutting edge, proprietary game engine technology with the id Tech engine which powers many notable FPS titles, and continues to make great advances in game technology under the direction of John Carmack, one of the country’s technology leaders and a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Hall of Fame.

id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack and no changes will be made in the way id Software develops its games. All the principals at id Software have also signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.

Bill Brown Scores Wolfenstein

Activision Publishing and id Software announced that Wolfenstein will feature an original score by composer Bill Brown. Brown’s work has been featured in numerous feature films and television shows including Ali, Any Given Sunday, CSI: NY and Finding Forrester. He previously also scored id Software’s Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Bill was the natural choice to create a soundtrack that emphasizes the fast-paced action of Wolfenstein while enhancing the overall mood during key moments and getting players fully immersed in the adventure,” says Kevin Cloud, executive producer at id Software. “Bill crafted the perfect soundtrack when we previously worked together on Return to Castle Wolfenstein and his experience and passion for the franchise will once again allow him to deliver an incredible score that draws the player deeper into the Wolfenstein universe.

Wolfenstein is scheduled for release later this year on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC and is not yet rated.
