How Halo’s tagline came to be

At The Azenberg Group’s [A] List Summit, G4TV.com had a chance to corner vice president of strategy and client services Steve Fowler to talk about his time at Microsft as the lead product manager from 2000 to 2003. during that time Fowler was responsible for the brand management on a number of action games, including Halo. Apparently the tagline for the game, “Combat Evolved” is attributed to Fowler, who explained during his talk with G4TV on its origins:

“Back in the original days of the Halo brand, before it was anything, we did a lot of consumer research. We went across the world, talking to consumers in Europe, Asia, and North America. We were concerned with gamers that weren’t aware of what Halo was and we needed to be concerned with them because if this was going to be a franchise title then we couldn’t just rely on core gamers or people that were following it since the MacWorld announcement. The new customers were going to be the ones that would make or break the Xbox, so we need Halo to go bigger than that.

The forward of the encyclopedia will be written by Frank O’Connor, who left Bungie as content manager in May of last year to work at Microsoft and more closely with the Halo franchise.

We’ve had initial chats with DK to publish an excerpt or two of the encyclopedia as it gets closer to release, along with getting a few copies for a giveaway to our readers, so stay tuned.
