Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop Ships

shop_manager_001_bmp_jpgcopy-640x Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop Ships actionCapcom’s Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop heads to retail today for the Wii. The game which is based on the Xbox 360 hit Dead Rising, is more third-person shooter/action and less open world zombie slaying sim, which has, naturally lead to some criticism of the game. Of course, having not played it yet I can not speak to whether or not it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread or yet another watered down, convoluted port to the Wii.

Unlike its Xbox 360 counterpart, the Wii version is split into a series of individual cases all of which Frank must complete in order to gain vital information that will allow him to piece together the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. In addition to the cases, players will be faced with the dilemma of deciding the rescue priority of the residents of Wilamette who also sought sanctuary in the mall. Depending on the player’s skill, some may not be so fortunate as each rescue needs to be undertaken in a set time period.

We Hope Chop Till You Drop is good, but we’re not holding our breath. Look for a full review from Crisp Gamer soon.

Microsoft Announces Limited Edition Resident Evil 360

red1 Microsoft Announces Limited Edition Resident Evil 360 online-playY’know, it’s been a while since Microsoft has released limited edition 360 to the public. Dead Rising 2: Zombies Do Vegas?

Screen_3 Dead Rising 2: Zombies Do Vegas? actionI’ll be the first to admit that one of the games I was first looking forward to when the first Xbox 360 rolled off the assembly line was Capcom’s survival horror, Dead Rising. Frank West’s harrowing, over-the-top 72 hour adventure in the Willamette Mall was one of the best times I had on the 360. Now, Capcom is returning to the world of Dead Rising, and it’s bringing PS3 and PC owners along for the ride.

Earlier this morning, Capcom officially confirmed that a sequel to the popular zombie game is in development at Canadian developer Blue Castle Games, working alongside a number of members from the original Dead Rising team, including producer, Keiji Inafune. Although Capcom has kept quiet so far on a possible release date for Dead Rising 2, one thing the company did confirm is the new game will not be exclusive to the 360 this time around, instead being simultaneously developed for the 360, PS3, and PC. Sorry Wii owners, it looks like you’re going to be stuck with the neutered port of the first game for the foreseeable future.

Details on the plot of Dead Rising 2, are still being kept under wraps, but the game is set several years after the infamous zombie invasion of Willamette. Apparently, the zombie virus was not contained at the end of Dead Rising and it ended up spreading unchecked throughout the United States. In Dead Rising 2, the latest outbreak hits ‘Fortune City’, and players will be gambling with more than just chips when they face off against the undead in the city’s massive hotel and casino. It looks like everyone’s favorite photojournalist, Frank West, might be a little busy this time around though (he’s covered wars, ya know), as both West and his camera are conspicuously absent from Capcom’s early screenshots.

More word on Dead Rising 2 is expected soon, and we’ll share what we learn as soon as information is released.

The Top 21 News Stories of 2008: 21 - 15

(contributors: Hal Halpin, President, ECA; James Fudge, David Chapman)

We count down the top twenty-one news stories of 2008, though picking which were the very best proved to be a painful, gut-wrenching exercise. There were so many interesting stories this year; we watched the interactive entertainment industry grow - and then later - retract as the global economy wreaked havoc on every kind of business you can imagine; players got their first taste of WiiWare, Home and the New Xbox Experience; we watched as the big three slugged it out for North American supremacy in the latest round of console wars and we saw Blizzard dust off its classic franchises and move million of copies of its Lich King expansion.

Yeah, 2008 was a good year, but not without its share of triumphs, disappointments, joys and sorrow. Here are the stories that moved us, made us angry, scared us and made us think about the industry we cover.

We begin with #21 - #15, starting now.

Capcom Wins Zombie Lawsuit

dead Capcom Wins Zombie Lawsuit actionCapcom dodged a bullet recently when a federal judge threw out a lawsuit by MKR group, the producer of George A Romero’s Day of the Dead. The lawsuit alleged that Capcom’s popular game Dead Rising, infringed on Romero’s movie about survivors fending off zombies in an abandoned shopping mall. Judge Richard Seeborg disagreed with MKR, noting that the similarities beyond the setting and the zombies were minuscule. The judge said that the concepts used by both the game and the movie were too vague to be copyrighted.

In my opinion this is a good thing for the game industry because some concepts just cannot be copyrighted and the movie industry would do well to save its money and avoid these kinds of lawsuits altogether. Dead Rising isn’t really about survivors anyway - it’s about what the player does in the few hours he has in the mall. Romero wishes his films had that much thoughtfulness and focus..

Capcom will bring its Wii Dead Rising game to America in Q1 2009, but it doesn’t like like it will be as much fun as the original on which it is based..

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
