Going Free-to-Play: The D&D Online Unlimited Q&A

Last week Turbine Entertainment announced an industry first: it revealed that it was retro-fitting a commercially launched, subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game and relaunching it as a free to play game with micro-transactions via an in-game store. The game in question is Dungeons & Dragons Online, which, along with The Lord of the Rings Online, is Turbine Entertainment’s bread and butter.
But the privately held MMO company isn’t just grasping at straws here or committing an act of desperation with this move, because many in the industry believe free to play is the future. Turbine reveals first free-to-play title: DDO Unlimited

Turbine is dipping its toe in the free-to-play waters with Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO Unlimited). DDO Unlimited is a free digital upgrade that for the first time makes a premium MMORPG free-to-play and introduces new perks for those willing to subscribe or currently are subscribing to DDO. Launching this summer, DDO Unlimited will introduce a new business model that is designed to provide different ways to pay and play for its MMO game.
Players can download and play DDO Unlimited for free with the ability to purchase additional content and items in the new DDO Store. Players can also opt to join the new DDO VIP program and gain unlimited access to all premium content for a single low monthly price.
Naturally there’s a free unlimited way to play DDO Unlimited if you want, without ever spending a dime. But for those that want some extra items and content, there’s the DDO Store. The DDO Store will reportedly offer convenience items as well as premium dungeon packs, additional character slots, hirelings (hired muscle), potions, character customization and more. Players who elect to subscribe to DDO Unlimited will have unlimited access to every premium adventure pack, receive priority server access, 10 character slots, a shared bank slot, and a monthly allotment of 500 Turbine Points to spend in the new DDO Store.
Want to know more? Turbine has launched a new website at www.ddo.com where players can learn more about DDO Unlimited and signup for the Beta program which launches today.
