Free-to-play Dungeons and Dragons Online goes live
Turbine today announced the official launch of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO Unlimited), probably the world’s first premium free-to-play MMO. While this new game does offer some new content like new playable races and classes and new areas, the most important thing that this retooled game offers is a better pricing scheme.
DDO Unlimited introduces a new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchasing adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store, or to subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content. Starting today, players can download and play DDO Unlimited for free by visiting www.ddo.com.
DDO Unlimited head start program begins
Today Turbine has begun the head start program for Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited, the soon-to-be free-to-play MMO. The head start is now live for all current and former subscribers as well as recent participants in the closed beta. DDO Unlimited introduces a new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchasing whatever extras they want or need like adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store. They can also subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content.
Besides being just free, the new version of the game introduces a higher level cap, introduces a new player class, and adds major new content including new items and a whole set of adventures. You can get started by visiting www.ddo.com.
You can also learn more about it by checking out Crispy Gamer’s recent interview with the executive producer of the game.

Going Free-to-Play Part II: D&D Online Guided Tour

In Part 1 of Going Free-to-Play: D&D Online Unlimited I talked to Turbine PR Director Adam Mersky and Executive Producer Fernando Paiz about some of what players can expect with the free version of the game.
In Part 2 I get a chance to see some of those concepts in action via a guided tour of the world with a high-level character and Executive Producer Fernando Paiz as my tour guide and (for all intents and purposes) protector. Along for the ride are Senior Producer Kate Paiz and Turbine PR Director Adam Mersky, who provide some facts about such things as how to change the color of your hair, the in-game store and the new areas and adventure modules available to players.

More details on DDO: Eberron Unlimited
Turbine has revealed some specific details on the new content that will be available with the release of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited, the upcoming free digital upgrade to its two year old MMO. Launching later this summer, DDO Unlimited will introduce a new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchase adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store, or to subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content. Players interested in getting a sneak peak of the new DDO Unlimited can sign up for a chance to participate in the Beta program at www.ddo.com.
A new player class familiar to D&D players called the Favored Soul will be released with the upcoming update. Favored Souls draw on divine magic to both heal and destroy. Like clerics, favored souls have access to powerful healing spells, but they are also more skilled with weapons than any other spell caster. Like sorcerers, they get a larger number of spell points than other spell casters and cannot freely switch spells at taverns or rest shrines.
The update will raise the level cap to 20, add new adventure packs (The Plane of Battle — Players can now travel to the Plane of Shavarath and explore a large wilderness area; and The Crime Syndicate - players help the Stormreach Guards eliminate the Sharn Syndicate ), improved graphics, improved combat, and the return of the Stormreach Marketplace - which was destroyed last year in an in-game event.
