Realms of Arkania trilogy invades Good Old Games

Some great news for fans of the computer role-playing games, Realms of Arkania: you can now play it on your modern PC thanks to Good Old Games. The old PC games were less than stable back in the day when I played them so I have high expectations that these three games will be crash and bug free.

Based on the popular German paper & pencil RPG series, “Das Schwarze Auge” (The Dark Eye), Realms of Arkania is a role-playing game series with deep character customization, good stories and tactical elements that make combat interesting. Good Old Games is offering Realms of Arkania 1 & 2 (Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny and its sequel Realms of Arkania 2: Star Trail) in a single package for $5.99 USD right now.

These games are allegedly DRM-free and compatible with Windows XP and Vista. The third part of the series, Realms of Arkania III: Shadows over Riva, will be available for purchase in the coming weeks. That one will cost you right around $10.

In the game, players don the role of a student enrolled in Particus Academy, whose main curriculum focuses on teaching would-be adventurers the ins and outs of surviving a vast and connected labyrinth underneath the entire world.

Class of Heroes promises over 500 character possibilities derived from 10 races, 2 genders, 3 alignments, and 15 majors. Changing your majors provides for further customization at higher levels. Naturally you’ll battle hundreds of monsters and uncover over 1300 item types along the way. Finally, there’s an alchemy system offering more than 400 recipes, giving you the ability to synthesize new items from random components found in the labyrinths, as well as customize your weapons’ attributes, range, and strength.

Class of Heroes is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB and is available now.

Geneforge: The Final Chapter

Indie game developer Spiderweb Software announced Geneforge 5: Overthrow for Windows and Macintosh. This new game will serve as the final game in the Geneforge series. Geneforge 5 brings the story of the Shapers (a secretive sect of wizards with the ability to create life) to a climactic finish. Th game opens with a land ravaged by war as two sides fight for control of the world - the Shapers and the Rebels. The balance is so delicate in this tug of war that one hero (you) could tip the scales and end the war. Geneforge 5: Overthrow presents an open storyline that lets the player choose one of five factions - each with their own paths to bring an end to the war. Players can use stealth, diplomacy or sheer force or just wander aimlessly killing anything that moves.

Jeff Vogel’s Spiderweb Software has created some of the best independently developed role-playing games on the planet, so we have high hopes that this latest game will do the same. Learn more by visiting www.spiderwebsoftware.com.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
