Sony Under Pressure to Cut PS3 Price

Okay, okay … so we know that the console wars will never end, and as long as there are video games, there will be people staunchly defending their console of choice. Still, in business, the bottom line is all about the numbers, and Sony is starting to feel the heat as its numbers continue to drop … at least as far as video game publishers are concerned. In an article on Bloomberg, Sony is being pressured to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 in an effort to build the consoles install base with consumers. The former leader of the console market has been hit hard with its current generation of hardware, with the PS3 consistently placing a solid third in sales behind the Wii and Xbox 360. Making matters worse, U.S. sales of the PS3 have steadily declined for three months straight.

Capcom Signs Monumental to Secret New Project

File this one away in the “Might Prove Surprising” department.

This morning, Capcom sent out a short little news bite to media outlets, announcing that it has signed a development deal with UK-based studio Monumental Games. Monumental will be developing an “as yet unannounced multi-platform title scheduled for release and published by Capcom later this year.”

Monumental is best known for the development of PC MMO games, the most recent of which have focused on the sports of hunting and soccer (football for our friends across the pond). Back in November of last year, Monumental made headlines when it picked up Swordfish Studios from Activision. With Monumental’s focus on online play, it should be interesting to see just what its Capcom project ultimately turns out to be.

For its part, Monumental is keeping relatively quiet on the whole thing, posting a simple statement on its website:

“With the wealth of in-house experience of latest-generation console development, it was only a matter of time before we embarked on a console project.

We can’t reveal the franchise as yet, but we can say we’re both proud and excited to be working on it. As you would expect given our core technology, there’s a substantial online element, but the gameplay focus is pure adrenalin.

We’ll let you know more soon!”

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
