Harold Goldberg’s Game Junkies Save The World!

writer0010_225 Harold Goldbergs Game Junkies Save The World! industry The Game Trust is an eclectic group of the most talented game journalists in the United States, so it never surprises us when one of our own decides to delve even deeper into the back story of the game industry’s long and storied history. Harold Goldberg is certainly not a stranger to writing books (his first was a book called My Life Among The Serial Killers, which he co-authored with Helen Morrison), but his new book is of particular interest to gamers because it promises to explore the game industry - from its humble beginnings all the way to the billion dollar industry it is today.

Over the past year, I’ve been carefully honing, editing, changing and adding to a book proposal,” Goldberg said in a note he plans to post tomorrow. “Right now, the book is called Game Junkies Save The World!

The new book may not be a departure from the excellent travel logs, reviews and columns he regularly contributes to Crispy Gamer, but it certainly different from My Life Among The Serial Killers. Published in over 17 countries, and serialized in The Times of London, the book he helped co-author was a dark, difficult book to write because of its subject matter and disturbing context.

Game Junkies Save The World! is described as a book that “delves deeply into the fascinating stories, anecdotes and facts that have not yet been reported in an industry that’s actually been around for 50 years (if you take Higinbotham’s bold experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory as a starting point).”

The new book will be published by Random House, a publisher that Goldberg says gets the whole concept of the book.

Wii For Dummies in Sept.

wii Wii For Dummies in Sept. platformsAre you a complete dumbass or do you know someone who is? Well, I cannot help you with that - seek professional help. However, if you have parents, grandparents, or a spouse that wants to learn how to use the Nintendo Wii with a slight amount of grace and some expert knowledge, then you might want to check out Wii For Dummies. The new book, which is set for release in September, is the brainchild of Game Trust member and Games For Lunch master Kyle Orland.

The book promises some in-depth help (explained in the simplest terms) on such topics as using the Wii with your broadband Internet connection, using the Wii controller (hopefully there’s a chapter in there about the evils of putting the Wii Remote through your high definition television set), getting the most out of all those Wii channels, creating the perfect Mii, surfing the Internet, uploading multimedia content, games for the whole family, and even how to use hacks.

The paperback book has a cover price of $21.99, but is available at amazon.com for $14.95 and at Barnes and Noble for $16.49 (and for members an additional 5 percent discount.

EverQuest: The Book

To celebrate the ten year anniversary of its MMO, EverQuest, Sony Online Entertainment is working on a book called EverQuest: The 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition. Scheduled to be released early next year, this retrospective celebrating the first decade of EverQuest will be available online and at select retailers in North America.

This new hardcover collector’s book celebrates that legacy of the MMO that started the 3D massively multiplayer revolution by taking a look at the past, present and future of the EverQuest brand.

The book is being written by veteran video game book and strategy guide author Rusel DeMaria. Those attending SOE’s annual Fan Faire next week, held in Las Vegas, Aug. 14 through 17, will have the opportunity to pre-order the book at a special price.

EverQuest: The 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition will be published by BradyGAMES and will be available at participating retail locations in early 2009.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
