Blu-Ray not being adopted by consumers, says survey

blu Blu-Ray not being adopted by consumers, says survey industryA recent poll by Harris Interactive reveals that, while Blu-Ray may have been proclaimed the winner last year in the high definition format wars, it’s not being adopted by rank and file consumers. Meanwhile, High Definition television sets are being embraced by Americans across the line. According to the data, nearly half of American households are now using high definition televisions, but only 11 percent own a HD enabled media device and only 7 percent own a Blu-Ray player.

The price of Blu-Ray players isn’t helping matters any: the number of Blu-Ray owners is likely to remain flat due of price and competition from other High Definition technologies. The purchase of both HD players are up ever so slightly from 2008 - 3 percent for Blu-ray and 5 percent for HD players. Perhaps Microsoft gave up a little too soon when it discontinued its HD hard drive add-on for Xbox 360? Blu-Ray also is facing some stiff competition from high definition content on cable, satellite, and the internet.

Sony Under Pressure to Cut PS3 Price

Okay, okay … so we know that the console wars will never end, and as long as there are video games, there will be people staunchly defending their console of choice. Still, in business, the bottom line is all about the numbers, and Sony is starting to feel the heat as its numbers continue to drop … at least as far as video game publishers are concerned. In an article on Bloomberg, Sony is being pressured to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 in an effort to build the consoles install base with consumers. The former leader of the console market has been hit hard with its current generation of hardware, with the PS3 consistently placing a solid third in sales behind the Wii and Xbox 360. Making matters worse, U.S. sales of the PS3 have steadily declined for three months straight.

Sony: More Job Cuts A Possibility

sony Sony: More Job Cuts A Possibility industrySony may be forced to make further difficult restructuring decisions beyond what it has already announced. This could include cutting more jobs than the 8,000 fulltime and 8, 000 temporary that it already announced last week. According to a Kyodo news service interview with the Sony president Ryoji Chubachi published Thursday, Sony’s top executive said more steps including further lay-offs may be needed to keep the company from sinking further into the abyss.

With only these measures, we cannot fully survive the current economic situation,” he said.

Chubachi pointed out that global business conditions are getting worse and demand for its consumer electronics products have been falling since late November. He believes this trend is one that isn’t going away anytime soon, so the company needs to do whatever it can to keep its head above water.
He also said that Sony would have to reassess the planned expansion of its personal computer, Blu-ray Disc and semiconductor operations into “trillion yen businesses” by March 2011.

While the awful state of the global economy can be attributed to a portion of Sony’s current problems — including consumer demand for some of its electronic products — the company’s PS3 can only be competitive with the Xbox 360 and Wii by cutting the price of the system. Cheaper Blu-Ray disc players are not helping matters any, considering that the PS3 was being billed as an excellent cost effective means of playing Sony’s high definition disc format.

It is a tough position to be in — and one that will mean some hard decisions and difficult times for workers who may become a target to reduce cost.
