sw BioWare Reveals Star Wars: The Old Republic genresAt an event at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco just mere minutes ago, BioWare founders and LucasArts’ Daniel Rodriguez announced a new massively multiplayer role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe. The new game, set in the Old Republic is called Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game was announced by BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, who confirmed what we already knew: the game is in development at BioWare Austin.

While BioWare’s founders are keeping most of the details secret, they did reveal that the goal of the game is to create something that anyone can pick up and play - even non-Star Wars fans. It was also revealed that companions will play a serious and integral role in the core gameplay. Players will also have a strong influence on their companions, based on their moral choices and attitudes.

James Ohlen, who is the creative director of BioWare Austin and the writer behind BioWare’s hit RPG KOTOR, offered some light details on when the game is set. Old Republic will be set 3,500 years before the Star Wars films and 300 years after the Obsidian developed Knights of the Old Republic II. Players will be able to choose between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, each offering their own set of classes. Every class will have some sort of back-story to get the adventure rolling just like the early Star Wars movie characters.

We’ll have more info on this game as it becomes available. In the interim, check out this first batch of screens and art from the game:  Star Wars: The Old Republic Media. And for a different take on today’s announcement, check out the latest Backward Compatible comic right here on Crispy Gamer.

mass_effect_xbox_360_13-640x Rumor: Avi Avrad Options Mass Effect filmAccording to a rumor floated by Variety’s Cut Scene Blog (citing multiple “reliable sources”), Hollywood movie producer Avi Arad has optioned the rights to BioWare’s sci-fi action role-playing game, Mass Effect from Electronic Arts.

Avi Arad is best known is the head of Marvel Entertainment’s movie business spearheading such hit films as X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man Ghost Rider, Elektra, Ghost Rider, and many more.

Certainly a Mass Effect movie is a great idea given the rich back-story in BioWare’s game and the many compelling characters would work well in a film. We’ll keep you posted on this story as it develops, but for now let’s just call it what it is: just a rumor.
