Fallout 3Ah, the G.E.C.K. Long a staple of the Fallout series, the Garden of Eden Creation Kit is the nearly mythical Holy Grail of the post-apocalyptic world, with the capability to build a lush paradise out of the nuclear wasteland. For fans of the PC version of the latest Fallout game though, there’s a new G.E.C.K. available that puts them in control of changing the world to their every whim.

Bethesda Softworks announced this morning that it has released the Fallout 3 level editor, via a link on the game’s official website. With the G.E.C.K. editor, users can create, modify, and edit any data in the game, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more. To help players get the most out of their modding experience, Bethesda also opened up the G.E.C.K. Wiki, a community-run site where modders will find everything they need to use the The Garden of Eden Creation Kit to the fullest.

So, Fallout fans, the time has come for all of you to cry ‘have G.E.C.K.’, and let slip the mods of war! (Apologies to Shakespeare for the pun)

Fallout 3Okay … try to act surprised at this bit of news: Fallout 3 is a hit. How big of a hit? According to Bethesda, approximately 4.7 million units of the were shipped worldwide last week for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, representing retail sales in excess of $300 million.

Fallout 3 was released in North America just last at midnight store openings in over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide . And in the UK, where it wasn’t released until last Friday, sales of Fallout 3 led the game being ranked number one among all video games, as well as being the number one game on each of its three platforms.

So, does the game live up to the hype? Apparently our own Tom Chick thinks so. Check out his review of the game here.

Fallout 3: Why You Can’t Kill Children

coverart00090 Fallout 3: Why You Cant Kill Children actionKilling children is a big no-no in video games. Developers often gently cross the line with violence and sexuality, but it is generally a rule of thumb that giving players the ability to kill children in a video game goes beyond the pal of decency and good taste - and will inevitably open the door to mainstream media criticism, angry political diatribe from the government and possibly censorship.

Sure, some of the best games (like the original Fallout and Ultima VII) allowed you to kill children, but Fallout 3 developer Bethesda Softworks never even considered including such a dark option in their game. There were certainly conversations about it, according to lead developer Emil Pagliarulo, but not one bit of code was included in the game. In other words, the option was never entertained.

sniper-640x Fallout 3 in Stores actionLast night gamers across the nation stood in lines outside game retailers for hours to get their hands on Bethesda’s Fallout 3. For most it was worth the wait. At the Best Buy in Rockville, MD, located near Bethesda Game Studios, members of the development team, along with Lynda Carter, actress and wife of ZeniMax Media CEO Robert Altman, were on-hand to celebrate with hundreds of fans who lined up in the rain as early as 1:00pm and came as far as North Carolina to buy the game and meet the developers.

From a few hours of play I can safely say that I love this game, but for another opinion check out Crispy Gamer’s Fallout 3 Review. Also, be sure to check out the latest Games for Lunch for Kyle Orland’s take on the game. Or you could just take my word for it - I wouldn’t lie to you, my friends.
