Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey announced

smt Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey announced ds-platformsAtlus U.S.A. announced Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, the very first first-person science fiction RPG for Nintendo DS set in the ultra popular Shin Megami Tensei RPG game universe. Strange Journey is set in the near future, where a mysterious and ever-growing, black void appears at the Earth’s southern pole. Unsure of what to do about this void, humanity sends an elite team of explorers (four ships carrying humanity’s finest soldiers and most cutting-edge technology) into the heart of the phenomenon in hopes of stopping its deadly expansion. Obviously this rift, black hole or whatever you want to label it as demonic and otherworldly in nature.

According to Atlus, Strange Journey’s game mechanics and presentation herald a return to the series’ roots. The game feature a first-person view, the ability to team up with more than 300 types of demons, plenty of options to build your party and party strategy and a mature rated storyline that long-time fans should appreciate.

When the black spot appeared in the Antarctic, mankind became nervous; when it began to spread, that anxiety turned to panic. The Joint Project, convened to discuss how to deal with the expanding anomaly, decided to send in four ships carrying humanity’s finest soldiers and most cutting-edge technology. The mission: to investigate what lay on the other side of what had been dubbed the Schwarzwelt and find out if there was a way to stop it from eventually covering the Earth.

You play as one of the many elite soldiers hand-picked for the Strike Team, but you are outfitted with a Demonica environment suit and posted to the Red Sprite under Commander Gore. Upon entering the Schwarzwelt, or pocket world, the crew finds itself forced to deal with harsh conditions, supernatural interference, and throngs of demons populating within the world.

101-in-1 Party Megamix released

Atlus U.S.A. has released 101-in-1 Party Megamix in North America today for the Wii. 101-in-1 Party Megamix sounds like a collection of bad dance songs sold “only on TV.” But in reality it is a collection of one hundred and one family-friendly all set in a variety of themes catering to racing fans, sports nuts, old school arcade gamers, action addicts, casual gamers, and fans of brain-teasing puzzles.

The games are broken down into three different modes TV Guide, Zapping, and Marathon. Featuring eight channels, TV Guide mode challenges players to beat high scores to unlock more games and earn bonus prizes to decorate their player profiles with. Zapping mode provides instant access to any currently unlocked game. Up to four players can join the party in Marathon mode where everyone plays five randomly selected games in a row and competes for the highest score.

The game is also available for the DS. Find out more at www.atlus.com/101party.

Atlus deploys select PSP titles to PlayStation Network

atlus Atlus deploys select PSP titles to PlayStation Network online-playAtlus U.S.A. has released a number of titles from its PSP UMD library on the via PlayStation Network this week including Crimson Gem Saga, Hammerin’ Hero, Yggdra Union, Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament, R-Type Command, and Riviera: The Promised Land. The game can be downloaded via PSP, PS3 and PC in the usual fashion. And now the comedic stylings of Atlus PR Manager Aram Jabbari:

We’ve finally reached a point where, according to our physicians, any further laughing at our masterfully executed plan of never making enough copies of our games for everyone poses risks to our health,” admitted Aram Jabbari, Manager of PR and Sales at Atlus. “In order to prevent illness, and because, hey, sometimes you just want to change things up, we’re very pleased to offer PSP system classics via digital download. It may mean that we’ll have to shut down our numerous online auction accounts, as we won’t be able to hoard large quantities of our hard-to-find games and then slowly trickle them out at obscenely high prices anymore, but the end result will be better for everyone.”

Now if we could just get them to release some of their PS2 classics on PSN (Steambot Chronicles, anyone?), then the world would be a perfect place.

Demon’s Souls unleashed at retail

Atlus U.S.A.’s Demon’s Souls, the action RPG developed by From Software, is now in stores around the country and the servers, which were disabled after the press was done last week, should now be fully operational. In Demon’s Souls players can team up with other players, fight them, or leave them messages to warn them or lie to them thanks to an innovative always connected multiplayer system.

But don’t take my word for it - read Gus Mastrapa’s review. To say he liked it a lot would be an understatement.

Demon’s Souls multiplayer online Oct. 6, says Atlus

Atlus says that its hardcore action RPG developed by From Software is proving to be a niche title, with the company shipping for more units that has for an RPG in a long time. That’s a given, considering how much fans and journalists have been fawning over it. But what consumers need to be aware of is that the game’s online servers - and therefore multiplayer and co-op features - won’t be live until Tuesday, Oct. 6.

What this means, says Atlus, is that users that might manage to pick the game up early and start it up will get an immediate PSN error and have to start playing offline.

So if you get a copy early, good for you but keep in mind that online won’t function properly until sometime on Oct. 6. You have officially been warned, so please spare us all any crying in forums.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
