American McGee’s Alice Heads Down the Rabbit Hole Once Again
Written on February 19, 2009 at 7:17 pm, by David Chapman
This one comes in from the “About Damned Time” Department.
Back in 2000, Electronic Arts and designer American McGee put a new spin on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland, taking the titular heroine down a darker, more gothic path than Walt Disney could have ever dreamed in his worst nightmares. And thankfully, gamers were taken along for the ride. American McGee’s Alice proved to be a big hit for EA, and developed a cult following that’s as strong today as ever. Don’t believe me? Hit up a nearby comic/anime convention and odds are you’ll still see more than a few cosplayers decked out as McGee’s vision of Alice. The game has even garnered the interest of Hollywood talent, including director Wes Craven and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, though the flick is currently trapped in development hell.

Written on February 4, 2008 at 12:00 am, by James Fudge
American McGee, through his blog, today announced the second project on which his company Spicy Horse is working — the first being the episodic action adventure game GRIMM. While he didn”t give it an official moniker, the second game is being called a multi-platform, twisted tale project that will utilize Epic’’s Unreal 3 engine.
The announcement is mainly to solicit world-class developers to join the Spicy Horse team. McGee is looking for a Producer, Project Assistant, Game Designer, Senior Programmer, Junior Programmer, Senior Artist, Tech Artist, Level Artist, Concept Artist and Level Designer. Details on working for the Shanghai-based development studio can be found at the blog.
On a related note, McGee says that development on GRIMM is going well. 12 episodes are completed, with another 12 to go, says McGee. Details other than that proclamation were not disclosed.
Geller Still Keen on Alice Movie
Written on January 28, 2008 at 12:00 am, by James Fudge
Former teen vampire slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar has told Sci Fi Wire (the news service for the Sci-Fi Channel) that she’’s still keen on the American McGee’’s Alice movie. So why would that be relevant? Because Geller owns the film rights to the popular game from American McGee based on Lewis Carroll’’s Alice’’s Adventures in Wonderland.
It’’s a passion project of mine, Gellar said in an interview with Sci Fi Wire. It’’s a story that I”d love to see. I”m fearful at this rate that I”m going to be the wicked Queen of Hearts because I”m going to be too old to be Alice, she added with a laugh.
Gellar was first introduced to the game by husband, actor and avid gamer Freddie Prinze Jr. Geller fell in love with the game’’s premise after playing through it (with a lot of help from her husband) and the rest, as they say, is history.
We got the rights to it, and Universal wound up getting really excited and put a lot of money into it, and then it’’s the usual story. There was a regime change.
But Geller insists she hasn”t given up on getting the movie done: It’’s still my project, and I”m still working diligently. So to all those Alice fans, I”m not giving up. Because I believe there is such a beautiful, crazy, cool, twisted story to be told there.
This film is going to need someone creepy to play Alice and Geller can”t pull it off in my opinion. Now, Dakota Fanning might be a good choice… Just throwing that out there for the person who ends up handling the casting on this one — if it ever happens.
