Atlus goes old school with 3D Dot Game Heroes

Atlus Retro classic gameAtlus U.S.A. have announced a new retro action-adventure game called 3D Dot Game Heroes for PlayStation 3, scheduled for release in North America on May 11, 2010. The game uses an 8 and 16 bit art style comprised of cubes to create an interesting aesthetic combined with simple gameplay mechanics to create a sort of homage to a time when 8-bit gaming was still sexy.

The game promises to fuse new and old art styles, simple — but deep — action-adventure gameplay, old school references and jokes that pay homage to the great games of yesteryear, story-based quests, a customizable hero built using pixels as your building blocks, the ability to trade your hero designs with friends, and much more.

What to Watch: The Deepening

deep What to Watch: The Deepening mediaI saw this on Friday but I forgot to mention it in the news. I am referring to the interesting interactive story The Deepening. A sort-of homage to The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” video, The Deepening is a playable web comedy short video that is reminiscent of those old Play Your Own Adventure books. Basically at certain points in the video it gives you some 8-bit inspired choices on which direction to take the story into. this of course can lead to some funny but unhappy endings for the story and its crazy characters.

You can check the video out at http://www.atom.com/spotlights/deepening/ . When I played it I got everyone killed. Oops! I should probably give it another shot.  To quote Danny Glover - “RIGGS! I’m gettin’ too old for this sh*t!”
