Dragon Age DLC in Dec.
Most of us haven’t even scratched the surface of BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins, and yet BioWare seems overly anxious to gives us more content to play. The company is kind of like an overly excited parent rushing their child through presents on Christmas morning. Meanwhile, we’re still trying to enjoy the original game’s various nuances and secrets.
But despite that, BioWare is moving forward with downloadable content in Dec. The first bit of DLC, Return to Ostagar, allows players to go on a quest to collect the mighty arms and armor of the once great King Cailan in Ostagar, the site of the Grey Wardens’ darkest hour. Besides these mythical arms and weapons, players will learn the secrets of Ferelden’s fallen king. Players will discover King Cailan’s secret political agenda and go behind enemy lines to revisit a place that many believed was forever lost to history. This location is particularly forboding because it was here that the Grey Wardens were almost wiped out.
Return to Ostagar will be available for $4.99 on the PlayStation Store, for 400 BioWare Points on the PC (yeah, BioWare points. Really) and 400 Microsoft Points on the Xbox 360 in North America. Return to Ostagar will be released this Holiday season worldwide. Figure out what BioWare Points are by visiting dragonage.com.

Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce coming to Xbox 360, PS3
KOEI announced that it plans to bring Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 16, 2010. Before the snobs start crying about yet another Dynasty Warriors game, let’s make with the details. The Strikeforce vein in the series takes place in a mystical version of ancient China where warriors possess the power of Fury. This power gives them superhuman strength, lightning fast speed and the ability to fly. Taking the role of one of the 40 playable characters, players can take on single-player scenarios or up to four friends can go online to launch raids as a team or battle it out competitively.
Using voice or text chat to coordinate assaults, players go on campaigns to infiltrate heavily-armed enemy strongholds, clash with armies comprised of thousands of soldiers, or slay mythical, massive beasts like dragons. In single-player mode, players have the option to choose and command up to three AI-controlled officers to join them.
Earlier this year at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show, producer Kenichi Ogasawara of Omega Force took to the stage with Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi, producer of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 to reveal details about a crossover within Strikeforce. As part of their collaboration, characters from TECMO’s Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 will appear exclusively in Strikeforce for PS3, while characters from KOEI’s Warriors Orochi 2 will make guest appearances in Strikeforce for Xbox 360. By completing guest character challenges, players can win the right to use that guest character’s signature weapon in combat.
Look for the game in February 2010.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days announced
IO Interactive announced today that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC in 2010. No doubt Jeff Gerstmann is delighted to hear that the game that cost him his job at Gamespot is getting a sequel.. IO Interactive, a part of Square Enix Europe (the result of a merger between the company and Eidos Interactive, who already owned the studio behind the Hitman series), describes the sequel as a brutal crime shooter set in the Shanghai’s dark and seedy underworld.
Promises this time around include a visual style and storytelling inspired by “by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era,” more back-story on the two disturbed criminals that serve as the protagonists, and loads of action.
The good news for journalists is that Square Enix, unlike Eidos, doesn’t tend to go around trying to get people fired - not that they could get away with such antics this time around.
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be released on the EIDOS games label and will be coming in 2010.
Atlus goes old school with 3D Dot Game Heroes
Atlus U.S.A. have announced a new retro action-adventure game called 3D Dot Game Heroes for PlayStation 3, scheduled for release in North America on May 11, 2010. The game uses an 8 and 16 bit art style comprised of cubes to create an interesting aesthetic combined with simple gameplay mechanics to create a sort of homage to a time when 8-bit gaming was still sexy.
The game promises to fuse new and old art styles, simple — but deep — action-adventure gameplay, old school references and jokes that pay homage to the great games of yesteryear, story-based quests, a customizable hero built using pixels as your building blocks, the ability to trade your hero designs with friends, and much more.
You can learn more about the game by checking out www.3ddotgameheroes.com.
Survey finds video games top holiday wish lists
A recent poll conducted by KRC Research, commissioned by the Entertainment Software Association, found that 42 percent of those surveyed will give or hope to receive a computer, console of related software for the holidays. The poll also found that 52 percent of participants believe that with the shaky economy, video games are a good option for family entertainment this holiday season (check out our “Non-Gaming Parents Should Follow When Buying Videogames for Their Kids feature” for some great holiday gift giving advice).
These numbers represent a 9 percent increase over 2007 and the research backed up the fact that both men and women enjoy computer and video games almost equally. Forty-seven percent identified women as recipients of such gifts, a 31 percent increase from 2007. Fifty-Four percent of those who play computer and video games also plan to play with a friend or family member during the holiday season - according to those surveyed.
“Computer and video games are topping holiday lists because they provide a superior entertainment value for the whole family,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers. “With 68 percent of American households playing computer and video games, U.S. consumers value the creative and innovative products the entertainment software industry produces and are seeking them out for themselves and to give as gifts.”
The national telephone poll, conducted for the ESA by KRC Research, surveyed 1,001 U.S. adults, between November 4 and 8, 2009.
What’s on the top of my wish list? Peace on earth, goodwill towards men, and an orange Crispy Gamer ball cap. That’s a gift worth having.

Modern Warfare 2 sanitized for Russia
If you live in Russia, and want an original version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you may be out of luck for awhile. The console versions of the game have been pulled from retails shelves as an official rejection of the “No Russian” mission in the game. If you are a regular Crispy Gamer reader than you have probably read some of our discussions of that mission (See our Modern Warfare 2 review, this blog post about playing it, another blog post about a segment on Fox & Friends and how the No Russian Mission is a failure). The objection is to a terrorist act, where the player takes part in a mission in an airport as an undercover agent secretly involved in a Russian-lead massacre of innocent civilians. Russian citizens and politicians don’t like the way the game depicts its soldiers in this Red Dawn style storyline and have donw something about it.
Further, the PC version of the game has been sanitized of the No Russian mission, so if you didn’t get the game before all this blowback you won’t have a chance to experience the mission for yourself. While people and governments certainly have a right to object to a game’s content, this hardcore approach seems a little rigid to me; couldn’t people object to the game’s content by simply not buying it?
According to published reports, these new console versions of the game will be released in less than a month, contingent on government approval.
