igf IGF Finalists Announced industry

The Independent Games Festival has named the finalists for its 2009 Independent Games Festival event taking place later this year as part of the Game Developers Conference. The finalists were culled from 226 entries, a 30 percent over last year’s entrants. More importantly, this year’s finalists come in all shapes and sizes - from web games to PlayStation Network games. The selections were made by 40 industry professionals and journalists whose egos are already too big to mention here.

It brings me great joy to see such personal favorites as Mightier and BrainPipe getting the nod, but makes me very sad to see games like Minotaur China Shop and Hinterland excluded from this list.. Oh well.

As always, all of the finalists games will available in playable form on the GDC show floor, and will compete for nearly $50,000 in prizes, including awards for Innovation, Excellence in Design, and the $20,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize, as well as a prize from sponsor Direct2Drive. Full list after the break.

egm EGM No More industry

So long EGM. After the January 2009 issue of the long running print magazine, it’s game over.  This news is another sad reminder that the magazine we all love are on the path to extinction. According to a Gamasutra report, the magazine has become a casialty of UGO Networks purchase of Ziff Davis’ 1Up Network. With the purchase of 1Up.com comes Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com. No word on how much this acquisition cost UGO. The report, which also contains a letter from CEO Jason Young, says that 30 people from the 1Up staff have been cut including web staff and podcast producers.

With this transaction happening, we have also made the decision to discontinue publication of EGM,” told 1Up staff in an email. “The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of the publication. With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.”

FileFront, a popular destination for downloads such as demos, patches, mods and utilities, will remain a part of the Ziff Davis family under its PCMag Digital Network. the company is putting a lot of faith going forward in this sector.

We will continue to operate the Filefront business as a part of the PCMag Digital Network,” continued Young in the email. “In the coming months we will determine the best ways to leverage the scale and functionality of this digital property to expand our business position.

On the eve of 2009, Crispy Gamer is proud to present to you the Top 21 News Stories of 2008. We have chosen what we believe are the top news stories of year, though deciding on which were the very best proved to be an exercise in compromise, because there were so many interesting and powerful choices this year.

We watched the interactive entertainment industry grow - and then later - retract as the global economy wreaked havoc on every kind of business you can imagine; players got their first taste of WiiWare, Home and the New Xbox Experience; we watched as the big three slugged it out for North American supremacy in the latest round of console wars and we saw Blizzard dust off its classic franchises and move million of copies of its Lich King expansion. To quote that Dickens’ classic: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

2008 was not without its fair share of triumphs, disappointments, joys and sorrow. Here are the stories that moved us, made us angry, scared us and made us think about the industry we cover.
