EA Confirms Upcoming GI Joe Game
Coming from the “About Damn Time” department, Electronic Arts finally confirmed this morning that, as a part of its exclusive licensing deal with Hasbro, it is currently deep in development of a new game based on the G.I. Joe toys and upcoming live-action movie. The game is scheduled to release around the same time as Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie, due to hit theaters August 7th. This will be the first time the G.I. Joe team has been seen on home consoles since the release of Capcom’s G.I. Joe: The Atlantis Factor on the NES back in 1992.
“As Hasbro and Paramount Pictures reignite the G.I. Joe property this year with an all-new toy line and film, EA is excited to play a major role in bringing this icon of pop culture history to a new generation of enthusiasts through interactive gaming,” said Chip Lange, General Manager and Vice President of EA Hasbro. “G.I. Joe offers exceptionally rich storylines and a cast of characters that lends itself incredibly well to creating an over-the-top action adventure video game that will thrill gamers as well as G.I. Joe fans.”
According to EA, the G.I. Joe game will feature an exclusive storyline that picks up where the movie leaves off, giving the company the freedom to pull content from the best moments of the film, the cartoon, and the toy line. The game will feature 12 Joe characters, each with unique abilities and weapons. The game will also feature a single-screen co-op mode allowing two players to join forces as a team in the classic struggle between good and evil. The game is currently in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, PSP, DS, and other mobile devices. While EA was still playing cagey about the developer of the game, we’ve heard through the grapevine that independent development studio, Foundation 9 Entertainment, was originally tied to the project.
To prep gamers for the upcoming game, EA has put together a website for the game at http://gijoe.ea.com and the company will unveil a “first look” of the game at Hasbro’s Showroom at Toy Fair in New York City next week.
