Andrew Lloyd-Webber to Enter Game Industry?
I’ll admit it, I thought things were strange enough when it was announced last year that Les Freres Corbusier was bringing out a musical based on Dance Dance Revolution, complete with “50 really attractive, barely-clothed young actors and buckets of free beer” (yes, that’s actually part of the play’s description). But today the word has come out that Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Really Useful Group, the company responsible for handling Webber’s various projects, is currently in talks with multiple video game publishers with the goal of bringing Webber’s musicals into the world of video games.
According to Really Useful Group Digital Director, Douglas Glen, “With the video gaming audience having moved from its male-dominated roots towards a more family-oriented demographic, now is the perfect time for us to take some of the best-known names in musical entertainment in a more interactive direction.”
While shows like Cats might seem oddly ripe for the video game treatment, especially in an RPG like setting, that’s not exactly what the group has in mind for the properties. Citing the growth of the female gamer demographic and the popularity of music based games like Rock Band, SingStar, Lips, and Karaoke Revolution, the group is looking to bring the Webber library to players by letting them sing along as characters from the shows and effectively “audition” for a role in the musicals.
