I certainly see your point. Baseball is notorious for this. But I think in NHL 10 it's taken to the extreme. This is especially true in the playoffs when an 8 seed is just as likely to beat a 1 seed -- and being a Jackets fan let me say that the idea that ANYONE can win the Cup just ain't true. ;) Also, the teams you mention, most did make acquisitions that made them more competitive...it just didn't happen by happenstance. In NHL 10 the teams are rated SO close together it's literally a crapshoot. Can you really see the Ducks, Wings and Penguins ALL missing the playoffs and Columbus winning 54 games? That's a tough sell. I REALLY like the idea of the darkhorse team making a run -- that's in part what makes sports compelling to me. But here there is no darkhorse. Everyone's damn near the same. Still, I can't recommend the game enough for its on ice gameplay. It's incredibly entertaining. I'll fire up NHL 2K10 today and see how it compares.

@DavidThomas: Yeah, it has to be tough to do that. I think a great example is MLB 09 The Show. I enjoy the commentary in that one quite a bit. But baseball is, I think, a little easier to nail in terms of atmosphere. It can be reserved and get away with it. If you listen to a radio broadcast of a football game...tensions run a bit high. I just wish the commentary captured that in Madden. If I break a 60 yard run, I'd like to hear the play by play team going nuts.

@JasonMcMaster: By a wide, wide margin. From quarterbacks that aren't accurate on every pass and the monumental stretching of the rating system to the completely redone franchise mode -- it's a much better game from top to bottom aside from the abysmal commentary. Hardcore features to be sure, but important changes nonetheless.

Passed over yet again. This is destroying my self worth.
April 10, 2009 7:31:43 PM
@JasonMcMaster: I don't know. When I interviewed the CEO of Cyanide he simply said that it was never on the table to begin with. I should have pressed him a bit on that but it was moot. But almost all of the Living Rules will be in, so I really feel like a heel scoffing at that. I've been wanting a TRUE Blood Bowl video game since MicroLeague released that bastard child of a game back in the mid 90s. May we never speak of that game again. My concern isn't that the Cyanide guys know Blood Bowl -- they REALLY do. But I want to see the AI in action. I don't want to see pass happy Dwarfs and grind it out Wood Elves. The races need to play the "right" way for the game to work (solo, anyway). But my Green Machine Orc squad will rule the Blood Bowl landscape!
April 10, 2009 6:59:54 PM
Yes James what's up with that! Also, keep in mind that the PC/360 game will not use the Special Play cards from the boardgame (which is sort of a bummer). And Blood Bowl not for sports gamers? Gus? Dude...that's crazy talk. Blood Bowl is a game for sports gamers and non sports gamers alike. Everyone should play Blood Bowl! When the PC version drops this summer an online league will commence! And Gus come on man..."Quarterback"? In Blood Bowl we call those gits Throwers. :)

Yeah the Madden test might be tough to do. :)Actually, I think running a 5 year Madden test is a good idea, we just can't compare it to, well, anything unless it's a text sim or a really old 2K game. But I think doing this for hockey and basketball would work.
