NHL 10 is a winner, plain and simple.

What's Hot: Excellent on-ice gameplay; Solid play-by-play and overall atmosphere; Fluid animations; Board pinning and Manual Passing are both superb additions

What's Not: Player and team ratings are way off the mark

NHL 10 is almost the perfect hockey game. It's loaded with options and sports great graphics, fabulous player control and realistic gameplay. It has just one ridiculous flaw.

Let's get that one ridiculous flaw out of the way. The player and team ratings are comically bad. The NHL is a competitive league, no doubt, but there is no way you can justify having all the teams rated within a few points of one another. In the world of NHL 10, the Red Wings and the Kings are on close-to-even footing. The Islanders and the Penguins is a tossup.

New goalie animations add even more authenticity
That's just plain silly; and when you compare this to the brilliant way in which Madden 10 rated its players and teams, it makes NHL 10 look all the more foolish. Play out a season and watch the simulated results. With ratings being jammed together, anyone can win the Cup. Anyone. I guess we shouldn't sleep on the Islanders this year -- because they are a serious threat in NHL 10.

Other than that, the game is brilliant. NHL 09 was no slouch, but the improvements made to the design for NHL 10 take it one step closer to hockey nirvana. Board pinning -- jamming your player into the opposing player along the boards in an attempt to wrestle away the puck -- is something no arcade hockey game has ever simulated, but NHL 10 pulls it off. Board pinning adds so much to the flow of the game, which is no longer just a track meet up and down the ice.

NHL 2010
Board pinning a marvelous addition this year
The Manual Passing feature is another fantastic addition, as it allows you to lead pass and also allows for more inaccurate passes and less tape-to-tape perfection when moving the puck. It's tough to get used to Manual Passing, as the pressure-sensitive left trigger is used to get more zip on passes, but after some practicing you will never want to go back to a simple button-press ever again.

NHL 10 is also loaded with custom options. You can play fast break hockey (like this series used to let you do), or you can tweak the settings to get a shockingly realistic game of hockey that is more about player positioning than huge hits and blazing breakaways. When playing on "Hardcore" mode with various gameplay slider adjustments, scoring a goal after cycling the puck is a truly rewarding experience. The game turns into a true simulation of the sport.

NHL 2010
The game allows true 6 on 6 online play.
There are other new goodies -- such as improvements to the Be a Pro mode, a new first-person fighting system, a 30-team online season mode and other tweaks to the formula -- but the gameplay is the real reason to get NHL 10. It's on-ice game is as good as that of any hockey game ever made, period. Now all we need is a roster update, so that the Sharks actually have an advantage over the Lightning.

I certainly see your point. Baseball is notorious for this. But I think in NHL 10 it's taken to the extreme.

This is especially true in the playoffs when an 8 seed is just as likely to beat a 1 seed -- and being a Jackets fan let me say that the idea that ANYONE can win the Cup just ain't true. ;) Also, the teams you mention, most did make acquisitions that made them more competitive...it just didn't happen by happenstance. In NHL 10 the teams are rated SO close together it's literally a crapshoot. Can you really see the Ducks, Wings and Penguins ALL missing the playoffs and Columbus winning 54 games? That's a tough sell.

I REALLY like the idea of the darkhorse team making a run -- that's in part what makes sports compelling to me. But here there is no darkhorse. Everyone's damn near the same.

Still, I can't recommend the game enough for its on ice gameplay. It's incredibly entertaining.

I'll fire up NHL 2K10 today and see how it compares.

Hi Bill, I've been following your writing for some time now. Nut and the Weasel, Gameshark and now here and I cannot believe that you forgot about about the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals of the last 10-15 years just to name a few. These teams were horrible the year before only to either make it to the Stanley Cup or win it the next. I saw the team ratings on the EA Sports Blog and I agree they are way too close together but then you said, "With ratings being jammed together, anyone can win the Cup. Anyone. I guess we shouldn't sleep on the Islanders this year -- because they are a serious threat in NHL 10." Yes, anyone CAN win the Cup. That's why the NHL is so great compared to other sports in this regard. You know the Pirates won't win the World Series and the Clippers are definitely not winning the NBA championship. There is a WAY greater chance that the Islanders will win the Cup. Video games are, just that, games. How we play them is not nearly as dependent on the ratings but our own skill levels. I've been playing NHL since Sega Genesis and I could pick up any game, from any year and pick the worst team and probably win the Cup after a try or two tries on Expert (or whatever the hardest level is). Team ratings are irrelevant. Now, If I want to play my arcade-like hockey game as a sim, that's a different story. But I don't think many people pick up NHL to play it like OOTP. Thanks for letting me rant, I get into this argument with my friends all the time. They complain that the Flyers' third line left wing is only a 77 with 82 speed when they should be a 81, with 86 speed. Then they'll go and score a hat trick with that guys and I'll lose 6-1. Drives me nuts. Ok, guess I should get back tending to my database here at work. Thanks!

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
