Unreal Tournament III (Xbox 360)

Unreal Tournament III for Xbox 360 is a victim of circumstance. It's a worthy shooter, but other than its speed, it does little to distinguish itself from the better shooters available for the system.

What's Hot: Refreshing sense of speed; Engaging online multiplayer

What's Not: Drab visuals; Trite dialogue; Low-calorie single-player mode

Regrettably, the Xbox 360 version of the game doesn't support user-generated mods, while both the PS3 and PC versions have them. Epic Games blames the nature of Microsoft's Xbox Live service for the absence, but makes up for the omission by including all previously released maps and five exclusive new ones in this version. To top it off, Epic also added an exclusive split-screen mode and two new characters to this new version.

While the premise isn't as fresh as last year's Gears of War, Unreal Tournament III offers the fastest online multiplayer experience around, even on the Xbox 360. If you enjoyed the first Unreal Tournament, you'll likely appreciate this game, though the controls may require a bit of an adjustment.

This review was based on a retail copy of the game provided by the publisher.
