Gears of War 2

War is a painful grind, barrier by barrier, for Marcus Fenix and his fellow troops. Gears of War 2 oils the parts taken from its predecessor and boasts some welcome new touches, too. Erin Bell reviews.

I don't want to bag too much on what is being hailed as a great game - and I have not had the pleasure of playing it yet - but it sure sounds like Gears of War 1.5. I'm all for stand-alone expansion packs..

Hey how come Marcus wasn't in the poll? I don't care is this is GoW 1.5. I enjoyed the first one so much I'm looking forward to picking it up again. Its one of the few games where you really felt you were slamming into the wall to take cover.

My roommate has not left his room in 3 days because of this game. He is obsessed. According to him it's the game of the year. I'd love to play it, but there is no getting the controller away from him. At least I got the apartment to myself all weekend. Thanks Epic!

I want to pick it up, but it's going to have to wait. Too much on my gaming plate right now.

I kind of hate the holiday glut. We go months waiting for a new title to play and then get deluged in the fall.

I'd say the biggest improvements are in the engine itself. Everything is lit in a much more natural light giving the characters and environments a more realistic look. It's just amazing to see bullet tracers and hear the screams / gun pops all around you.

The engine is able to also handle more on screen baddies which makes fights more engaging and texture loads, while still present, are more natural than before.

If you loved GoW at all, this game is a no brainer.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
