A bit during fights, when I'd fail and try to figure out a better strategy for taking down multiple enemies.

Did you get an impression of how long it is safe to leave things in containers that don't belong to you?

Based on what Pete said it's nearly completely unsafe. If you hike to town, sell, then hike back he made it sound as if the stuff would get looted by someone else.
