I love Nethack so much. I haven't played in awhile though. You've inspired me to install it again.

I have a version of Rogue on my iPhone that's pretty cool, but it's not the same.

I love these kinds of games, though I do enjoy the remakes that are out there with better graphics a bit more. What can I say, i'm a bit spoiled.

@CG-Prophet:

I don't mind the ANSI interface ... it brings back memories of my youth. Plus, most of the more graphical ones have really ugly, windows 3.1-era graphics.

Don't get me wrong though - if someone made a game that was like Nethack (turn-based, great AI, lots of depth), only used say a modern 3D isometric engine with some animation capabilities, it would be a grand day indeed.

Basically I'd trade the real-time aspect of Diablo III for more depth.

@CaptainHomeless:

Have you played Shiren: The Wanderer? I'd say the Mystery Dungeon series is close.

@GusMastrapa:

A rogue-like for the DS ... eeeenteresting. I will have to take a look at that.

Yeah, I still have to pick that Shiren game up. It's like $12.99 for probably 94867 hours of gameplay.

Aslo you might want to check out <a href="http://www.crispygamer.com/columns/2009-02-17/the-indies-february-2009-2.aspx">Lost Labyrinth</a>. It's pretty and fun.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
