Dissenting Opinion: Resident Evil 5

It's provocative, but is Resident Evil 5 fun? Tom Chick provides a second opinion on the game.

It's actually games like this that give me a new appreciation for real-time inventory management. It takes a skilled hand to make it work without being completely frustrating, but I think RE5 manages that balance. Well, better than Alone in the Dark did, at any rate.

Still, while as a player I am not concerned about the stupid story, stupid imagery, and Chris' stupid head-sized biceps, I am a little disappointed that it didn't try any harder, especially since they seemed to be so earnest about the whole thing.

Putting aside all the other stuff talked about elsewhere on this site, I just can't get by the controls.

This is a great read because it sketches out some of the other feelings you might get while playing the game ... anger, disgust, vengeance, control, power. How you turn those specific feelings into interpretations of the game then becomes food for thought. Awesome.

I thought one of the great things about RE4 was that you DIDN'T have to worry about conserving ammo.

Anyone remember The Suffering? Great horror game, and it showed that plentiful ass kicking weapons and horror didn't have to be mutually exclusive.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
