30 Retro Game Ads in 30 Days: Pole Position
This commercial was 90 seconds long because a mere minute could not contain its greatness. At the 60-second mark, you've got yourself a pretty tidy morality play -- the corporate executive who stops exciting things from happening gets his comeuppance with the awesomest trip to the go-kart track in history (which is a punishment because Biff, Sr., is such a sweater-vest-wearing square). To this point, the ad also follows the first rule of 1980s game advertising: The more a game claims to immerse you in its world, the less it will actually do so.
Then, in the last 30 seconds, the director executes his true vision, borrowing a psychedelic color shift from "2001: A Space Odyssey," a post-apocalyptic setting from "Mad Max" and a pair of googly eyes from "You Can't Do That on Television" to create a pastiche of visual violence that leaves Mr. and Mrs. Upper-Middle Class reeling. And after this bizarre visual/spiritual journey, the only explanation we get is a cryptic koan: "Pole Position from Atari. It'll bust your crank. And leave skid marks on your soul." I think I read that on a fortune cookie once.
