Crispy Outlook 2009: Resident Evil 5

Change is coming to Resident Evil 5 by way of setting and co-op. But one thing remains the same -- killing zombies still ain't easy.

Outlook 2009: Resident Evil 5

Gus Mastrapa
Gus Mastrapa: This is the moment of truth for the Resident Evil series. Capcom's top-down re-imagining of survival horror controls and camera in Resident Evil 4 was a triumph, but what have they done for us lately? If the game doesn't continue to evolve and improve, gamers are going to abandon it for games with more humane player interaction. Co-op is a great start. Based on my previews, I can tell you one thing about for sure about Resident Evil 5: It's going to be tough.

Scott Jones
Scott Jones: I've played through about half of the game so far. I have to admit, Gus, that I'm all for innovation, but I think co-op is a big step in the wrong direction for the series. I miss the surreal loneliness of RE4. I don't like having Sheva around all the damn time (even though she has saved my ass on many occasions). And the game feels like it's got too much Lost Planet in its DNA. There are too many large-scale boss fights. And those previews you've done are spot-on about the difficulty. I've been ambushed by not one, not two, but three chainsaw-wielding maniacs. I don't mind being overwhelmed, but I do appreciate having a fighting chance. Hopefully the difficulty will be tweaked before the game goes gold.

Outlook: There will be blood.

Yeah and the way the game handles prompts is pretty bad. When your sidekick is in serious trouble it cuts to her - even if you are in the midst of a fight.

I came away from the demo with a bad taste in my mouth. It seems like they decided to make an action game, but then stuck with the inherently gimped control scheme of RE4. It worked in that game, but I think there are too many enemies coming too quickly for that old control scheme to remain viable. Comparing the RE5 demo to Dead Space really exposes RE5 as a dinosaur in my mind. I was looking forward to the game, but now I'm not sure I'll be playing it.

The Wii port was tough after playing it on GC and PS2. It might be time for Capcom to rethink the control scheme. I know someone somewhere loves it but it ain't me.

Play with a friend! Please! Pick-up co-op can be soul crushing.

I admit that I've never actually played a Resident Evil game besides RE2, and simply haven't gotten used to the controls on the RE4 Wii port. I'm hoping that RE5's co-op will be a good enticement. As long as whomever's on the other end doesn't call me various horrible names when he/she recognizes I suck at this kind of thing.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
