Gift you're hoping to give/get: Punk Rock boxed set
Game that it goes with: Guitar Hero World Tour
Why they'll taste great together: The dilemma: you've got pimply adolescent nieces and nephews who can't get enough "Rock 'n' Roll High School" in their lives. (Hey, at least it's not "High School Musical.") The solution: "
"Punk Rock Xmas",
"American Hardcore" and
Guitar Hero World Tour.
World Tour's Music Studio feature lets wannabe DIYers record, mix, and edit original songs using pre-recorded sounds from the in-game instruments.
Gift you're hoping to give/get: iPod Touch
Game that it goes with: Rock Band 2
Why they'll taste great together: Apple likes to say that its popular touch-screen-equipped media player lets folks touch their tunes and unlock a whole new way of interacting with music.
Rock Band 2 goes one better and proves that the only thing better than a playlist is a set list. The new wireless instruments and no-fail mode let everybody join in on the fun. You can try strumming along to AC/DC on your shiny new Touch, but it probably won't be as fun as
RB2.
Gift you're hoping to give/get: Cargo Shorts
Game that it goes with: Far Cry 2
Why they'll taste great together: Once all the kids are off to college, it's not uncommon for parents to go vacationing to all sort of exotic locales. They'll be carrying foreign currency, maps and digital cameras, among other things, so extra pockets will only help speed things along. And while your parents probably aren't mercenaries charged with eliminating a rogue arms dealer as in
Far Cry 2, Ubisoft's sprawling first-person shooter might be a good way to prepare them on the beauty and dangers of roughing it abroad. Do make sure they have malaria medication on hand, okay?
