Games for Lunch: Battlefield: Bad Company

In a nutshell: An FPS that's in Good Company. Get it? No? Aww, forget it.

0:43 I've got some time left, so how about we try out the multiplayer? This should be good for a laugh -- as in, I'm going to be laughably bad.

0:44 The multiplayer mode has its own intro! "The war is over, and now opportunity is knocking. Just look at all that gold. Trouble is, you're not the only one thinking that way." Teams are divided into attacker and defender. Former has to grab gold from the defender's crates, latter has to stop them. More gold means more reinforcements. "May the greediest team win." Interesting. Like Counter-Strike with gold.

0:45 I join in an Unranked Quick Match. The loading takes a little while.

0:47 The Defenders win practically the second I join in. I didn't even fire a shot! But I was on the Defenders team, so I WIN!! WHOO!! I'M DA MAN!

0:48 This time I'm an Attacker. I jump in a Jeep and do my best Leroy Jenkins impression by gunning straight for the enemy base. I get blowed up right quickly, I does.

0:51 This time I try taking a tank in. It's a lot slower, but I love the built-in artillery launcher. I get hit by rocket launcher fire, so I jump out and try to take out the attacker. I miss him at POINT BLANK RANGE and get knifed to death. I am SO BAD at this.

0:52 I make it to a gold crate this time, but I can't figure out what to do once I'm there. I get knifed from behind. Sigh.

0:56 After making it to the gold crate two more times, I finally figure out to hold down the B button to set an explosive charge. I kill an enemy while defending the crate site, but I get hit quickly and the charge is defused. At least I'm getting the hang of it!

0:57 I think I just destroyed a tank by crashing into it with another tank. This is unquestionably awesome.

0:59 The Attackers lose. "You lost our retirement fund. Now what are we gonna do?" Um, work until death?

Would I play this game for more than an hour? Yes.

Why? In the single-player, I'd keep going just for the writing. In the multiplayer, I really, really like the tanks.

This column was based on a demo version of the game downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
