0:44 In the end, the ace was my only point. I can't seem to get the timing right on the spikes. This game has potential, though, so I try again.
0:46 I lose 5-3 this time, and the only reason I do that well is on the strength of my computer partner's blocking skills. My bumps never seem to go high enough. I like what they're trying to do, but it just doesn't seem precise enough. Still, I might try it again.
0:47 Large Tony tries the figure skating. With the Nunchuk plugged in, I have to move with the control stick and swing up when you hit a trick marker.
0:50 This skating is surprisingly fun! The joystick controls are responsive, but also affected by the ice, which makes it a bit tougher. Large Tony also controls differently when he's in different skating poses. First place! I could definitely see doing that again.
0:53 Medium Cliff joins Large Tony and Large Sabine for some three-on-three b-ball! All my guys move like cows and miss easy layups! Also, it seems way too easy to steal. No one's getting shots off because we just keep stealing back and forth. The halftime score (after one and a half minutes) is 3-0, computer.
0:55 My layups start going in during the second half -- my distance from the basket is important, it seems.
0:57 I win, 6-5! Seems a little like Basketball for the
Wii Sports set: super-simple, super-cute, with almost nothing to do with the real sport.
0:58 Soccer's the final Deca Sport. Controls seem an awful lot like basketball, but I'm hopeful, anyway.
0:59 Compared to basketball, the players move quite well, and the computer seems pretty smart about passing the ball around and avoiding my slide tackles. They score an early goal because my goalie can't hold on to a simple shot.
1:02 Whoo! I tie things up with 21 seconds left in the second half, thanks to a putback after a deflected header. This is pretty fun!
1:07 Five minutes into overtime and no one has scored! Not for lack of trying, either. The goalies are just too good, it seems. It's not gonna put EA's
Fifa out of business, but I'm still enjoying it.
1:11 This game will never end! No one can score! I'm getting a bit annoyed with my teammates, who don't seem to know how to defend the center. I keep having to take over for them.
1:17 Enough of this. I do have other stuff to do today. I'd keep playing if I didn't, though.
Would I play this game for more than an hour? Yes.
Why? Archery, ice skating, soccer and ESPECIALLY curling.
This column was based on a retail copy of the game provided by the publisher.
