Review: Blur

Subtitle:
Can a Good Online Mode Make a Game?
thumbnail_summary:
Here's your one sentence review of Blur from Bizarre Creations: it's Mario Kart, grown up. There's more to it than that, but really, it feels like it took everything from the famous kart racer and added depth, polish and features that older audiences can appreciate and even get addicted to. I guess that's what they were trying to get at in their silly ad campaign.

Review: Lost Planet 2

Subtitle:
Sweet Monsters Outweighed by Sour Gameplay
thumbnail_summary:
Ten years after the events of the original game, Lost Planet 2 tells the story of the brutal conflict to collect life sustaining Thermal Energy on E.D.N. III. Numerous factions fight to control the precious material, and are willing to do whatever it takes in order to survive. While the war is tiring on its own, the denizens of E.D.N. III must also contend with the Akrid, a ferocious insect-like life form that ravages the land in search of prey.

Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360)

Subtitle:
Final Fantasy Paradigm Shifts in a New Direction
thumbnail_summary:
Final Fantasy. These two words combine to represent what has become the standard bearer for role playing games for the better part of two decades. As the post-title number incrementally rose with each new release, gamers were treated to vast worlds, ever more complex plots, and increasingly stunning visuals. Despite the fact that each Final Fantasy set a new standard for production values, the series’ core foundation remained the same.

Preview: Blur

Subtitle:
Mario Kart and Burnout Just Had a Very, Very Sexy Baby
thumbnail_summary:
It's been a while since I've played and really enjoyed a racing game. Wipeout HD came close, but it was definitely Burnout Paradise; the mayhem and arcade-like controls worked for me. I always preferred the crazier racers over hyper-realistic ones like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. After playing the multiplayer beta of Blur, I think I may finally be hyped for a new racing game.

Assassin's Creed II: Bonfire of the Vanities

Subtitle:
Not a Vain Affair: Ezio's Story Comes to an End with This DLC
thumbnail_summary:
Yesterday, Ezio's missing memories came to a searing finale with the Bonfire of the Vanities DLC pack. It's a smooth transition from the closing events of The Battle of Forli, continuing the developments that lead to Ezio's recovery of the piece of Eden from Girolamo Savonarola (The bad guy in black). So is Ezio's less-than-ideal homecoming a blazing triumph or a grease fire?

Aliens vs. Predator

Subtitle:
One Would Think That Shooting Aliens Would Be Fun
thumbnail_summary:
Aliens vs. Predator is a game without a single excuse for its utter lack of quality or ingenuity. I’ll admit it is pretty; that’s about all it has going for it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that this game was designed to hurt me. A bit egomaniacal I’ll admit, but nothing explains the pain this game has brought me. Nothing else explains failure of this kind.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Xbox 360)

Subtitle:
Heartbeat Sensors Won't Help When a House Falls on You
thumbnail_summary:
Bad Company 2’s true forte obviously lies in its online multiplayer. It offers some of the highest body-count to playtime ratios in the FPS world, immersing players in gargantuan ground wars frenzied with small arms fire, vehicles, and all manner of munitions-candy-store delights that go “Kaboom.”
