Grown Up Gaming: Balancing Your Time

A large amount of today’s console gamers are people who have grown up playing games, often starting their gaming career from anywhere between the Atari to the current generation. But as games mature with us the notion of cutting gaming out of our lives and dismiss it as a childish hobby seems less necessary. It’s recreation, or it’s storytelling, or it’s aggression therapy, and these are all things adults can use.

But the problem with growing up while trying to maintain any time-consuming hobby is that a variety of life’s responsibilities will arise: a full time job, a heavy college workload, starting a family, etc., so it’s not always reasonable to assume you’ll have time to get through a 60-hour RPG in less than two weeks like you did in high school. And with release dates closer together these days, it becomes difficult to stick to a regular schedule and still keep up with everything that’s new.

The grown up gamer requires a special balance between responsibilities and game time. For some people it’s staying up later to get in a few hours a night until they finish a game. For others it’s sticking to portable gaming on their bus/train commute. For me it’s a mixture of both, oftentimes even playing a handheld console while catching up on TV (which can overload your brain, so be careful).
