Nintendo Loses $21M in Patent Infringement Case

by David Chapman, 5/14/2008 11:54 PM

It's a good thing Nintendo's been selling so many Wiis these days.

According to an Associated Press article, yesterday a federal jury has ordered Nintendo of America to pay Texas based company Anascape Ltd. a total of $21 million after Anascape sued both Nintendo and Microsoft for infringing on twelve patents dealing with analog sensors, tactile feedback and vibration mechanisms. Prior to the start of the trial, Microsoft settled with Anascape for an undisclosed sum.

The jury found that Nintendo infringed on Anascape's patent while designing its Wii Classic, WaveBird and GameCube controllers. Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo's Senior Director of Corporate Communications, said the company will seek an appeal and expects the court to reduce the award "significantly." Scibettra also said that Nintendo was pleased no infringement was found with the motion-sensing technology used in either the Wii Remote or Wii Nunchuck controllers.
